The City of Leawood is launching Safe Streets Leawood, a community-driven initiative focused on making streets safer for everyone who travels through the city, whether by foot, bicycle, scooter, other e-device, or vehicle.

The effort is funded through a federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant and will guide the development of a comprehensive safety action plan to reduce crashes and improve safety for all roadway users.

Over the coming months, the City will work with residents, businesses, schools, and community organizations to evaluate current conditions, identify safety concerns, analyze crash data, and develop strategies to make transportation throughout Leawood safer and more accessible.

"Safe Streets Leawood is about making it safer and easier for residents to move throughout our community, whether they travel by foot, bicycle, e-device, or automobile," said Mayor Marc Elkins. "This initiative allows us to take a comprehensive look at our transportation network and develop a long-term plan that reflects community priorities and industry best practices."

The Safe Streets Leawood initiative will focus on:

  • Improving safety for all roadway users

  • Identifying locations with elevated crash risks

  • Gathering community feedback on transportation challenges and opportunities

  • Updating policies and planning tools to support safer travel

  • Developing a data-driven strategy to reduce serious injuries and fatalities on Leawood street

The initiative aligns with the federal SS4A program's goal of achieving zero roadway deaths and serious injuries through proactive planning and community engagement.

Community participation will play a key role in shaping the plan. Residents will have multiple opportunities to provide feedback through surveys, public meetings, and other engagement activities throughout the planning process.
