The City of Leawood invites residents to a Community Open House on Tuesday, July 8, to review and give feedback on conceptual plans for the future of the 96th Street and Lee Boulevard site. The event will take place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Oak Room at City Hall, and will offer a chance to view a design concept, speak with the design team, and share your thoughts in a casual, come-and-go format.
The Open House is part of the City’s continued planning process for the site, which once served as Leawood’s first fire station and City Hall. Over the past year, the Governing Body and community members have participated in numerous discussions, surveys, and presentations to shape a vision for this civic landmark. BBN Architects has used that input to develop four draft concept plans, which explore how the site could evolve to meet the community’s needs while honoring its past.
“The 96th and Lee site is a meaningful part of Leawood’s history,” said Mayor Marc Elkins. “We’ve had thoughtful conversations with residents and the Governing Body over the past year, and we’re looking forward to continuing that dialogue as we shape a vision for the site’s future.”
What's Being Considered
Each concept includes a variety of features based on public feedback and site analysis, such as:
Walking trails, playgrounds, and open lawn
A water feature and community gardens
Monuments honoring the site’s civic history
Meeting space or restrooms
Reuse or removal of existing buildings
BBN Architects is evaluating these concepts with attention to feasibility, neighborhood character, green space, and long-term phasing.
